Amazing. Not really sure how he does it. Epstein seems to have a magical sense, especially when creating close-ups, as if there is never a better way to photograph whatever we are looking at.
Like all of his other films I have seen, he is at his best when he doesn’t have to get bogged down in narrative elements, and so the 2nd half, when we jump to the main land, suffers some in comparison to the island scenes. Like the carnival scenes in Coeur Fidele, the re-creation of a fever dream here is what he is best at, pure cinema.
