We bounce back from the only Malick movie I haven’t loved to something really great. It feels like he is shaking off more and more shackles of traditional film making. Really about all that is left is the stars, which I wouldn’t mind getting rid of too, but I don’t see that happening anytime soon. I need to see this again, there is so much there, but one thing that stood out is that it seems more self contradicting than his earlier films, something that seems to increase with each one since Tree of Life. This really helps undermine some of the complaints I often hear about his films – they could often seem naive, but I don’t think you can say that about this.
