City symphonies are weird in that I think so much of the appeal for me is as a historical document. They are bound up in a certain kind of romanticizing, from the heavy grain black and white photography, to the highlighting of different fashion and technology. I don’t think something shot now on video would have the same appeal. So then I wonder what it was like when these films came out, what appealed to the viewer then?
