Every time I watch it I like it more. It utilizes the artifice of the music to translate what it feels like to live.
One of my favorite films as a child, it doesn’t hold up on the whole, though the few standout songs still are great. The story is a bit tedious and you again get a Disney protagonist that is pretty bland, especially in comparisons to their surroundings. Perhaps this is intentional, a kind of straight-man for the children to identify with, but it doesn’t make great viewing as an adult.
I just can’t get into Melville. It is always just surface level pleasures for me and the romantic macho shit gets very tiring. I used to say this was my favorite of his, having only seen it once long ago and having only seen a small handful of his films. I don’t know, it seems silly to even pick a favorite. Maybe one day I will find one that works for me.
