I still can’t completely understand what makes his movies work so well. They seem so simple, but there is a magnetism that keeps me enchanted.
Kaurismaki’s films seem fitting for the holiday time somehow. Dependable, and a perfect mix of your heart warming and breaking. If you are a fan I can’t see there being many films that stick out enough to be bad, but there are a few that I think especially work and this feels like one of them, sitting beside Shadows in Paradise and Le Havre for me. Here it is the wonderful treatment of his female protagonist that really helps push it over for me. It might be cliched to say at this point, but you really just don’t see these kind of strong women in movies enough.
