When I first saw this it seemed like a revelation. It is still pretty great, but the over-wrought music and repetitive narrative hurts it a little. Still there is so much promise here, so much fire and passion against the individualism that we are usually celebrating in our culture.

So glad I finally watched this.

The sets and lighting get the most attention, when people aren’t talking about it as a flop, and for good reason.  It is bananas and it is a huge lost that Coppola didn’t get to continue at the studio.  I can’t imagine what he would have done had he continued in that setting instead of having to go earn all of his money back.

Tom Waits music is excellent. Harry Dean Stanton with a perm.

I started off not liking these people much, but gained empathy for them.  The ending is great because while she comes back and they are going to keep trying it also doesn’t imply that their problems are solved.  This is the mature outlook I wish more movies (people) took on marriage.  His singing in the airport hit me, it’s corny, but that’s why it works.

All around just excellent.  Up there with The Rain People and The Conversation for Coppola’s best.
