Affair stories are always difficult, but this actually does a pretty good job. The morals are a complicated mess just like they should be. Still I feel like Carne usually earns my respect, but somehow is missing that little touch to really wrap me up.
This was the start of a weekly film screening I am doing with a friend. We made a list of our favorite movies and then are taking turns showing each other the movies the other person hasn’t seen off of our list. He was up first and brought this. I liked it and loved moments, but it’s “theatrical” trappings – everyone talks a lot always about how they feel and always way to thoughtfully – worked against what I felt were it’s stronger points, primarily its lovely visuals and impressionistic feeling. Good performances all around, especially standing out was Michel Simon, who has been great in everything I’ve seen him in. Fatalistic in a very French way.
