4.19.2015 Kumiko The Treasure Hunter

While watching this I kept coming back to the urban legend that inspired the movie. It is barely a story, more an anecdote, and an odd thing to stretch into a feature film. It often felt like it was able to transcend these humble beginnings, but at others times, notably the ending, it felt like it couldn’t escape it. I just wanted it to come to something beyond the origins, and it did, but barely. I don’t know what the point of the film was beyond myth making/an inside joke. There were moments I thought it was going somewhere else, but then it stopped. Still this was good, enchanting, is sticking with me. I am struggling, but that’s ok.
