Patricia Arquette, both her performance and her character, were the best thing about this film.I think probably to a certain degree the family parts worked better for me because they felt closer to my own experience, no more so in that character. This is a real person and the ability to really capture this roundness of character is amazing. The use of time allows things like set design to really carry some of the weight of this. Just look at her house in the later portions of the film- it grows from what someone who has finally “made it” thinks her house should look like into a more organic space as becomes more comfortable with herself. Part of me wishes the film would have been more focused on the family, but that’s not what the movie is obviously and we still got some great things from it.
